What is History?
History is defined as "the study of past events, particularly in human affairs." However, History is so much more than just the study of past events. History happens everyday. Everything you have done up to this moment, that is now in your past. It is part of your own history. Articles printed in a newspaper, those newspaper will be looked at someday by people in the future, and seen as history.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. —George Santayana.
History is such an important subject, as it has a tendency to repeat itself in some ways. In 2014, there was a surge of a civil rights movement for the LGBT community. This movement mirrored another civil rights movement in History, that of the 1960s for Black rights. Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it.
History has evolved over the years, and there are many different forms which it can take. Before writing, the tradition of Oral History was how people passed it down. Although this was not the most reliable way, many stories and aspects of history still are alive from this method. As time passed, people began to write down the history that they heard, and this helped it to be preserved.
Archives have been created to help people to experience documents from our past. Historians visit archives often in order to see primary sources and learn from them. Archivists are extremely important in preserving our past, and it is up to the current generation to help preserve it as well.
The History of the world is evolving everyday. Sometimes, it can be an obvious event, such as September 11, 2001. Other times, those living in the moment may not realize what they are part of, such as the Germans during the Holocaust and the Rise of the Third Reich. Everyday is a moment in History, so enjoy it, because you never know what people will look at in the future.
